Brad Lackey

Brad Lackey is one of America’s pioneering motocross racers of the 1970’s and 80’s. In 1982, after a decade of trying, he became the only American to win the 500cc World Motocross Championship. He retired after winning the ‘82 world championship, leaving a legacy as one of America’s top motorcycle racers of all time.

Changing My Mind

Changing My Mind – that’s what I was doing. I was going to jump off because I thought the bike was going to endo clear over – it was going to throw my ass off. But then I had at least 6 seconds in the air for it to come back – and it did – it started coming back. I thought, ‘Hey…I can save this if I just hang the heck on!’ The picture was shot when the front end was starting to come back up. Yeah…“changing my mind”…would be a great name for the drawing.

Evel Knievel - New!

Evel Knievel was A true pioneer. What he started evolved into one of the
most popular motorsports ever. There are thousands of riders today making
a living all over the world jumping motorcycles. Even though the sport of
extreme riding has come a long way since Evel roared toward the ramp on
his Harley,the idea remains the same: Entertainment. I drew this freehand
with charcoal for RacerX Magazine in honor of one of my childhood heroes,who
we will always miss but will never be forgotten.

Rally Pointe

The Rally Pointe charcoal drawing was a very fun and special challenge to me. It takes real skill to draw chrome with something black! I think that a bunch of Harleys parked in a row is Art in itself … this Charcoal drawing is a high class gift for yourself or that special someone!

Racer X Helmet

Davey Coombs of RacerX Magazine asked me to draw this for his tribute to the Motocross racers and fans stationed in the Middle East and other parts of the World. He e-mailed me saying to create something with a peace sign, an American flag, his RacerX emblem with the corner peeling up, and the strap going across the page. I hadn’t drawn a peace sign since 6th grade, researched it and discovered it is actually from a old Navy symbol … a soldier standing on deck with two flags out from his side … I also drew a civil war Ö

Villopoto on Washougals Horsepower Hill

Ryan grew up in Washington state racing all over including my home town of Port Angeles , raced many times at the local Deer Park track. I let him by a few times in practice and was in awe at how fast he was ! This was fun to draw as I was preparing to go to the 2007 Washougal Nationals.. he is so fast most people only see him from this angle!

Jeff Ward

Jeff Ward won the 2006 Super Moto Championship! You can almost hear his bike coming around the corner in this Drawing! Michael spent a lot of time paying attention to ALL the details of the engine, his riding gear, his sponsors and logos. Well, let’s just say – close detail on everything in the drawing! Special thanks to Troy Lee for supplying the awesome photo to work from.

Jesse James

The photo used for this drawing was taken on the Jesse James and Kid Rock’s ride to Mexico. Jesse with the copper bike, and Kid Rock with the Dukes of Hazard Theme. This piece took Michael over a 120 hours to draw.

Bob Hannah

Bob “Hurricane” Hannah likes this one. This famous shot shows his intimidating style. I think his large signature helps with that!

Travis Pastrana

Michael drew most of this charcoal drawing in the motor home at Washougal. In between he and his son’s racing. Travis’ signature really makes this one!

Ricky Carmichael

This charcoal drawing shows Ricky’s awesome style at the US Open. Most of it was created in Michael’s Motor home between racing at the Washington Nationals in 2003. Around 75 hours on this one. A lot of this one was done listening to Factory Race Bikes on the track. Nothing better!

Malcolm Smith

This is one of Malcolm’s favorite shots. Will Pattison set this drawing up with Michael. This original was donated to the Blue Ribbon Coalition and auctioned off at the Indy Trade Show for close to $3,500. Bob Hannah purchased one of the 20 artist proofs. Needled Malcome at the Men’s Breakfast saying he had, “never seen Malcolm’s front wheel that high off the ground” LOL.

Davi Millsaps

Michael sat down with Davi at Glen Helen during the nationals and sorted through his assortment of photos. They picked an awesome one! Most of this one was drawn at Michael’s studio in beautiful Port Angeles, Washington overlooking the Straits to Victoria Canada. Listening to ZZ Top, Jack Johnson, etc.

Jeremy McGrath Starting Line

This was a fun one to show the speed of McGrath and Carmichael off the starting gate. When Michael first showed this creation to McGrath, he said, “Jeremy, you have the jump on Ricky”.

“Good call!” said Jeremy.

Kevin Windham

This shot is from Broom Tioga. It shows Kevin’s trademarked relaxed, smooth style. Michael always starts out drawing the helmet, using that to measure out all the proportions from there. He finishes the wheels and tires last. He loves to show the motion with them. Finished this one on Christmas Day in the log house. Huge snowflakes falling and listening to ZZ Tops greatest hits!

Roger DeCoster

Roger DeCoster was Michael’s hero when he was just starting out racing. He had photo’s of Roger all over his bedroom. This is the first turn at Carlsbad in about 1974 – most can tell by the gate at the top left. Over 100 hours went into this piece.

Chad Reed

This work of art was mostly drawn at one of Michael’s favorite locations – a rustic log house near a Bavarian village called Leavenworth in Washington State. This awesome photo was taken at Southwick. Over seventy hours of work in this one.

Jeremy McGrath

After drawing this awesome shot of Jeremy, Michael met him for the first time in Las Vegas at the US Open. Jeremy loved it and agreed to autograph 200 limited edition prints so his fans could purchase them and enjoy them for years to come. This is the drawing that sparked Michael’s famous motorcross/supercross works of art.

David Bailey

David Bailey has always been one of Michael’s favorite riders. He met David Bailey at Anaheim a few years ago. While showing David his portfolio, he could instantly see his appreciation of art.

David and Michael picked through many photos and settled on this awesome shot at Daytona in 1984.

James Stewart

Michael drew this freehand with charcoal from a photo taken by Steve Bruhn. Most of the drawing was created inbetween racing with his son Aaron at the Washington Nationals.
